There have been quite a few viral videos claiming to show the "correct" way to use a handheld can opener popping up over the last few weeks, but is it truly the right way?

Let's remove the myths. First off, there are several different types of handheld can openers on the market now and depending on which type you purchase, there is a right and wrong way to use them.

The traditional version was designed to be used vertically. Although it may be possible with some older models to open a can horizontally, it leaves the entire top of the can sharp, which in turns makes it a lot easier to cut yourself. Using it vertically, cuts below the folded top, which keeps the sharp edges safely inside the can.

That being said, there are several versions that can be held horizontally and are specifically designed to be used that way (like the one in the video below), but I would highly suggest using any standard (see also: cheap) can opener the way you always have... VERTICALLY!
