NEW YORK (AP) — Anthony Bennett is the first Canadian to be taken No. 1 in the NBA draft

The Cleveland Cavaliers surprised the crowd at the Barclays Center in New York by taking the UNLV forward over a pair of big men, Nerlens Noel and Alex Len, who many had thought would be the first two picks. Bennett was the Mountain West Conference player of the year and has starred for Canada's junior national teams.

Noel fell to No. 6, where the New Orleans Pelicans took him and, according to a person familiar with the details, then dealt his rights to the Philadelphia 76ers for a package headlined by All-Star guard Jrue Holiday.

Len went to Phoenix at No. 5.

Orlando passed on both of the big men, too, going with Indiana swingman Victor Oladipo with the No. 2 pick. Washington took Otto Porter Jr. with the third pick, keeping the Georgetown star in town.

The Charlotte Bobcats did go for a big man at No. 4, but they took the second Hoosier of the night, selecting 7-foot center Cody Zeller.

NEW YORK (AP) — With half of the top six picks in the 2013 NBA draft recovering from injury, the 2013 draft has kicked off the NBA's summer trade season.

Nerlens Noel was one of the favorites to be taken first Thursday night, but he tumbled out of the top five and right into a trade. After taking him at No. 6, the New Orleans dealt his rights to the Philadelphia 76ers for All-Star guard Jrue Holiday. That's according to a person familiar with the details.

Hosting the draft at Barclays Center, the Brooklyn Nets made the biggest news. A person with knowledge of the talks confirmed a Yahoo Sports report that the Nets and Celtics were working on a trade that would bring Paul Pierce, Kevin Garnett and Jason to Brooklyn. Gerald Wallace, Kris Joseph, the expiring deal of Kris Humphries and three future first-round picks would go to Boston. The trade can't be completed until July 10, after next season's salary cap is set,

Boston traded up three spots in the draft to get Gonzaga 7-footer Kelly Olynyk. General Manager Danny Ainge described him as a complementary player who will fit in well with Rajon Rondo, Avery Johnson and Jeff Green.

Dallas dropped three spots in the trade with Boston, and appears to be one of the teams trying to clear cap room for Dwight Howard. ESPN reported Thursday that Howard is unlikely to return to the Los Angeles Lakers when he becomes a free agent next month.
