The Wyoming Cowgirls were chosen second in the Mountain West women’s basketball preseason poll. Senior Liv Roberts was picked to the Preseason All-MW team.

The Mountain West announced its preseason poll and preseason all-conference team as voted on by the league’s 11 head coaches Wednesday.

The Cowgirls received six first-place votes and 216 points in the balloting for second place. That was only five points back of the preseason favorite and defending MW tournament champion Boise State. The Broncos earned seven first-place votes and 221 points.

Three other teams also received first-place votes. Colorado State also got six first-place tallies and had 211 points for third in the preseason poll. New Mexico was tabbed for fourth and received four first-place votes and 186 points. UNLV got the remaining two first-place tallies and were just edged to fifth with 185 points.

Utah State, Fresno State, San Diego State, San Jose State, Nevada and Air Force were selected sixth through 11th.

Roberts was chosen for the MW Preseason All-Conference team. The senior is coming off an injury late in her junior campaign. She averaged 16.5 points, 8.6 rebounds and 2.6 assists per game in Mountain West games. She earned all-conference honors last season and also led the conference at 44.6 percent 3-point field-goal percentage.

New Mexico’s Cherise Beynon was named the Preseason Player of the Year. She averaged 15.8 points, 7.5 rebounds and 6.6 assists per game last season.

Boise State’s Shalen Shaw, Fresno State’s Candice White and McKynzie Fort of San Diego State rounded out the preseason team. New Mexico guard N’Dea Flye was selected as the Preseason Freshman of the Year, while Preseason Newcomer of the Year honors went to Tesha Buck, a redshirt senior guard for the Lobos.
