A family was displaced after a fire and extensive smoke damaged their home Sunday evening, according to a news release from the Casper Fire-EMS Department.

Fire department crews and other agencies responded to the report of the fire in the 2800 block of East Fourth Street shortly before 5 p.m.

They found the single-family home with smoke and fire coming from the exterior windows.

Firefighters entered the building and quickly extinguished the fire.

The occupants were not in the residence at the time and there were no reports of injuries.

Two family pets were rescued, but several other did not survive.

The Casper Fire-EMS Department continues to investigate the cause of the fire.

Seven units, three investigators, and department chief officers responded as well as officers from the Casper Police Department, and an ambulances from Evansville Fire-EMS and the Wyoming Medical Center.

During this fire protection month, Casper Fire-EMS urges residents to review their plans for fire safety in the home and workplace. Test smoke detectors and replace the batteries if they are out of date. Determine two exits from your home, and establish a family meeting place such as a mailbox or neighbor’s home.

As the weather turns colder, remain vigilant with all sources of heat in your home – create a three-foot safe space around heating appliances.
