Halak Records Second Shutout – NHL News ANd Notes For January 25th

UNDATED (AP) — Jaroslav Halak (YAR'-oh-slahv hah-LAHK') had an easy time of it, in recording his second shutout of the season, 3-0 over Nashville. Halak was called on to stop just 13 shots, one less than in his season-opening 6-0 win over Detroit.

Patrick Berlund scored on a penalty shot against the Predators to help the Blues win for the third time in four games. Rookie Vladimir Taraseno and T.J. Oshie (OH'-shee) had the other goals for St. Louis.

In other NHL action;

— Semyon Varlamov (var-LAH'-mawf) made 33 saves for his ninth career shutout as Colorado topped Columbus 4-0. Matt Duchene (doo-SHAYN') had a pair of goals and an assist.

— Marian Hossa scored a power play goal 1:41 into overtime to give unbeaten Chicago a 3-2 win at Dallas. The Blackhawks rallied from a 2-0 deficit on power play goals by Patrick Sharp and Jonathan Toews (TAYVS). Chicago has won all four of its games this season.

— Patrick Marleau (MAR'-loh) scored the go ahead goal with 1:53 remaining to help San Jose beat Phoenix 5-3. Marleau's second goal of the game gave him a league-leading six for the season, and highlighted a four-goal third period for the Sharks.

— Eric Staal's hat trick helped Carolina break into the win column with a 6-3 victory over Buffalo. It was the Sabres first loss of the season after two wins.

— Sam Gagner's overtime, power play goal lifted Edmonton past the Los Angeles Kings 2-1. The loss leaves the defending Stanley Cup champs winless in three games this season.

— Wayne Simmonds and Jakub Voracek (VOR'-ah-chehk) scored to help Philadelphia win its first game of the season, 2-1 over the New York Rangers. The Flyers not only avoided their first 0-4 start in team history, they beat the Rangers for the first time in two seasons.

— Andrei Markov had a goal and an assist to help Montreal beat Washington 4-1 and drop the Capitals to 0-3 this season. Washington has lost its first three games of the season for the first time in nearly two decades.

— Matt Moulson and Michael Grabner scored two goals each, as the New York Islanders scored four times in the third period for a 7-4 win over Toronto.

— Erik Karlsson scored the go-ahead goal in the second period to pace Ottawa to a 3-1 win over Florida and help the Senators improve to 3-0.

DALLAS (AP) — Jamie Benn and the Dallas Stars have agreed to a $26.25 million, five-year contract. The All-Star center gets $5.25 million each season, with the first year of the deal pro-rated because of the NHL lockout.

The 23-year-old Benn was a restricted free agent who set career highs with 26 goals, 37 assists and 63 points for Dallas last season.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Philadelphia Flyers forward Scott Hartnell is expected to miss four to eight weeks because of a broken left foot.

He suffered the injury after being struck by a shot in Tuesday's games against New Jersey.

Hartnell had one point in three games. He led the Flyers with 37 goals last season and had 67 points.

TORONTO (AP) — Toronto's Joffrey Lupul (LOO'-pul) will miss at least six weeks of the NHL season after breaking a forearm during Wednesday's win at Pittsburgh. The veteran forward was in front of the net during a second-period power play when he was hit in the arm by a slap shot taken by a teammate.

Lupul left the game immediately and didn't return.
