Wyoming Cowboy quarterback Brett Smith has been named the Mountain West Conference Offensive Player of the Week. Smith threw for a career high 412 yards and 3 touchdowns in the Pokes 28-23 win over UNLV on Saturday. Smith has not thrown an interception in 4 games in a row.. It's the fifth time Smith has garnered the award in his two seasons at UW. Defensive back Marquestion Huff was named the Defensive Player of the Week in the conference. Huff made a goal line strip on UNLV's Caleb Herring that saved a touchdown, and turned into a Cowboy touchback. The Pokes conclude their season this Saturday afternoon when they host San Diego State.

The Denver Broncos have lost running back Willis McGahee for a while. McGahee will be out 6-8 weeks after tearing a ligament in his right knee on Sunday in the win over San Diego. Head Coach John Fox said it was a non surgical tear and McGahee will not be put on the injured reserve list. He has rushed for 731 yards this season.

College athletics and conference alignments still shifting as Maryland will leave the ACC and join the Big 10, starting in 2014. Rutgers is expected to do the same as early as today. Meanwhile ESPN.com is reporting that Boise State and San Diego as well as BYU have been talking with the Mountain West Conference about returning to the league. Boise State and San Diego State were scheduled to leave the Mountain West and join the Big East next year but are reconsidering after the BCS awarded automatic access to one of their bowls in the so called group of 5, which would be the best team out of the 5 mid tier leagues, the Mountain West, the Big East, Conference USA, the Sun Belt and the Mid American Conference. Both San Diego State and Boise State would stand to make more TV money from the Big East, but the league in the past year has lost 6 schools to other leagues. BYU left the Mountain West in 2010 to go independent and are in the midst of a contract with ESPN that pays the school $4-million a year.
