World-famous cyclist and seven-time winner of the Tour de France Lance Armstrong has announced his retirement from the sport. The 39-year-old previously retired for 3 years in 2005, but he says this time it’s for good, claiming that his age is catching up with him.

“It has been an excellent ride,” he told The Associated Press. “I really thought I was going to win another Tour. Then I lined up like everybody else and wound up third.”

Armstrong, said that he was leaving to spend time with his family — he has five children — and that his age was catching up to him. At last year’s Tour he was nearly twice as old as some of his top adversaries.

Armstrong is currently under investigation of performance-enhancing drug use.
