UNDATED (AP) — The Atlanta Braves are still alive in the National League East race. The Braves downed Washington 3-1, taking two of three in their weekend series to cut the Nationals' lead in the NL East to three and a-half games.

Alex Wood, the Braves 23-year-old southpaw, combined with two relievers on a five-hitter. The only run Wood allowed in his seven and a-third innings came on Ian Desmond's 19th homer. Justin Upton hit his 21st homer for the Braves. Atlanta's winning run came on an infield single by Jason Heyward.

In other baseball:

— In a 19-inning marathon, Toronto outlasted Detroit 6-5 after rallying from an early 5-0 deficit. Jose Bautista's single in the 19th inning drove home the winning run to end the longest game in Blue Jays' history.

— Yoenis Cespedes (yoh-EHN'-ehs SEHS'-peh-dehs) hit a three-run homer in the eighth inning, and the Boston Red Sox bounced back from a 19-inning loss with a 3-1 victory over the Los Angeles Angels. The teams returned just 12 hours after the longest game in the majors this season, a 6 1/2-hour epic won 5-4 by the Angels on Albert Pujols' (POO'-hohlz) homer well after midnight early Sunday morning.

— Kurt Suzuki hit a tiebreaking double and Josh Willingham added two-run homer in the eighth inning, and the Minnesota Twins snapped a 12-game losing streak to Oakland by beating the Athletics 6-1.

— Seattle doubled up the Chicago White Sox 4-2. Austin Jackson, acquired in a trade with the Detroit Tigers before the deadline, matched a career-high with four RBIs.

— Colorado edged Arizona 5-3 in 10 innings. Corey Dickerson hit a tiebreaking homer with two outs in the top of the 10th inning as the Rockies ended their six-game losing streak.

— Anthony Rizzo hit a game-ending RBI single in the 12th inning, and the Chicago Cubs beat the Tampa Bay Rays 3-2 to avoid a three-game sweep. The last-place Cubs struck out 17 times, running their total to 44 for the weekend series, but Rizzo and touted rookie Javier Baez, who had two hits apiece, saved the day.

— Alex Gordon and Salvador Perez each homered and Danny Duffy pitched into the seventh inning as the Royals beat the San Francisco Giants 7-4 to extend their winning streak to seven games. The Royals, who won 10 in a row in June, have put together two winning streaks of seven or more games this season for the first time since 1985, the last time they were in the playoffs.

— Devin Mesoraco (mehz-uh-RAH'-koh) hit his third grand slam of the season and drove in six runs as the Cincinnati Reds salvaged the finale of a three-game series against the Miami Marlins with a 7-2 win. Mesoraco leads all major league catchers in home runs and the National League in grand slams. The fifth-inning outburst gave Johnny Cueto (KWAY'-toh), who is 14-6, some breathing room. In eight innings, he allowed five hits and two homers with two walks and nine strikeouts.

— Carlos Carrasco pitching five dominant innings and the Indians beat the Yankees in New York 4-1. Jason Kipnis got three hits and scored three runs for the Tribe, which finished the season 4-3 against New York. This marks just the second time in 22 years that Cleveland has taken the season matchup.

— Tyson Ross recovered from a two-run first inning to pitch six strong frames and Seth Smith hit a bases-loaded triple as San Diego beat the Pirates 8-2 in Pittsburgh. The Padres have now won 14 consecutive series at the Pirates' home park.

— The Cardinals beat the Orioles 8-3 to avoid a three-game sweep. Rookie Kolten Wong had four hits and scored twice and Peter Bourjos (BOHR'-jus) homered in the win.

— Clayton Kershaw won his 14th game to tie for the National League lead as the Los Angeles Dodgers beat the Milwaukee Brewers 5-1 to avoid a three-game sweep in a matchup of divisional leaders. The 14-2 Kershaw allowed a run and six hits with two walks and six strikeouts in eight innings. Kershaw also reached base three times and had an RBI single in the eighth.

— Ryan Howard had a game-ending single with two outs in the ninth inning after pinch-hitter Marlon Byrd had a tying hit and the Phillies pulled out a 7-6 victory over the Mets. Chase Utley singled, tripled, homered and drove in three runs for the Phillies, who snapped a five-game skid against the New Yorkers.

— A series between the two Texas teams came to an end with a 6-2 win for the Rangers over the Astros. Nick Martinez got his first win since May 24 and Adrian Beltre (BEHL'-tray) and Shin-Soo Choo both homered for the Rangers.

UNDATED (AP) — The Cleveland Indians have put outfielder David Murphy and designated hitter-first baseman Nick Swisher on the 15-day disabled list. Murphy, who has been bothered by soreness on his right side, tweaked his oblique on a swing Saturday. Swisher has been slowed because of an ailing right knee.

The Indians have recalled outfielder Tyler Holt and infielder-outfielder Zach Walters from Triple-A Columbus.

In other baseball:

— The Detroit Tigers have placed right-handers Joakim Soria and Anibal (AH'-nih-bahl) Sanchez on the 15-day disabled list. Sanchez, who is 8-5 with a 3.53 earned run average, left Friday's game in the fifth inning with a strained pectoral muscle. He's expected to miss three to four weeks.

— The Los Angeles Dodgers have placed shortstop Hanley Ramirez on the 15-day disabled list with a strained right rib cage muscle. Ramirez felt tightness in his right side before Friday night's game, the start of a three-game series with the Milwaukee Brewers. He walked in the first inning of that game before being removed in the bottom of the inning.
