UNDATED (AP) — The Pittsburgh Pirates have clinched their first winning season since 1992 and are within one game of the NL Central-leading St. Louis Cardinals following a shutout victory. Meanwhile, the Cincinnati Reds are two games behind the idle Redbirds after losing to the worst team in the division.

Gerrit Cole struck out nine while holding the Rangers to three hits over seven innings of the Pirates' 1-0 win at Texas. Rangers starter Yu Darvish was working on a two-hit shutout until Marlon Byrd and Pedro Alvarez hit consecutive two-out doubles in the seventh inning to put the Bucs ahead.

The Rangers are two games behind Oakland for the AL West lead.

The Reds were 2-0 losers to the visiting Chicago Cubs as Travis Wood scattered six hits and struck out seven over seven innings. Ryan Sweeney's solo shot put the Cubs ahead in the top of the second, one inning before Luis Valbuena (val-BWAY'-nuh) also went deep off Bronson Arroyo.

The Baltimore Orioles and Cleveland Indians are within 1 ½ games of Tampa Bay for the final AL wild-card berth.

Chris Tillman struck out nine while allowing two runs and four hits in seven-plus innings of the Orioles' 4-2 triumph over the New York Yankees. Tillman outpitched CC Sabathia (suh-BATH'-ee-uh) despite giving up solo homers by Alex Rodriguez and Lyle Overbay.

Nick Markakis (mahr-KAY'-kihs) was 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored to help Tillman improve to 16-5.

The Yankees are three games behind the Rays in the wild-card race.

Solo homers by Asdrubal (as-DROO'-bul) Cabrera, Yan Gomes (gohmz) and Carlos Santana powered the Indians past the Royals 4-3. Ubaldo Jimenez (oo-BAHL'-doh hih-MEH'-nehz) gave up only an unearned run while striking out 10 in seven innings.

The Indians are within 4 ½ games of the AL Central lead after the first-place Tigers fell to the Chicago White Sox 5-1. Detroit starter Max Scherzer failed in his third bid for his 20th win, surrendering five runs and six hits in four innings. Miguel Cabrera was ejected in the first inning of the Tigers' fifth loss in six games for arguing about a check-swing.

Paul Konerko opened the scoring with a two-run single in the first inning before the White Sox won their second straight since a nine-game losing streak.

Also in the majors, Juan Uribe (yoo-REE'-bay) homered three times while going 4-for-4 with four RBIs in the Dodgers' 8-1 rout of Arizona. Ricky Nolasco allowed an unearned run and three hits in s 6 2/3 innings as Los Angeles reduced its magic number for clinching the NL West to eight.

Evan Gattis (GAT'-ihs) hit a two-run double while Atlanta put together a five-run fourth to beat Miami 5-2. Kris Medlen evened his record at 12-12, allowing two runs in 6 1/3 innings as the Braves ended a four-game skid and reduced their magic number for winning the NL East to eight.

Gio Gonzalez tossed a one-hitter and Washington belted five home runs in a 9-0 romp over the New York Mets. Denard Span, Ryan Zimmerman, Jayson Werth, Tyler Moore and Wilson Ramos (RAH'-mohs) went deep for the Nationals.

Trevor Plouffe (ploof) had three RBIs and Minnesota's bullpen tossed scoreless ball over 4 1/3 innings of a 6-3 win against the Angels. Josmil Pinto was 3-for-4 with an RBI double and two runs scored for the Twins.

San Francisco beat Colorado 3-2 on Brandon Belt's RBI single in the bottom of the 10th. Belt also forced extra innings with a run-scoring double in the eighth.

Houston took advantage of a pair of errors while scoring four runs in the ninth inning to beat Seattle 6-4. Jimmy Paredes (pah-REH'-dehs) and Jonathan Villar each had two RBIs for the Astros.
