1928 — The first team sports event was held in the Boston Garden, as the Montreal Canadiens beat the Boston Bruins, 1-0. (More info.)

1960 — Linebacker Chuck Bednarik of the Philadelphia Eagles hit Frank Gifford of the New York Giants so hard that it knocked Gifford unconscious and caused him to miss the 1961 season. Philadelphia won, 17-10, to clinch the Eastern Conference of the NFL. (More info.)

1977 — Walter Payton of the Chicago Bears ran for a then NFL-record 275 yards in a 10-7 win over the Minnesota Vikings at Soldier Field. (More info.)

1982 — The California Golden Bears beat the rival Stanford Cardinal, 25-20, on a five-lateral kickoff return on the last play of the game. Kevin Moen scored the winning touchdown by running through the Stanford band, which prematurely ran on to the field in celebration. (More info.)
