In a game that ended in the early hours Wednesday morning, the Atlanta Braves stole a 4-3 win in 19 innings against the Pittsburgh Pirates when Julio Lugo was called safe at home, despite video evidence that proves he was out by several steps.

Home plate umpire Jerry Meals, however, managed to get the easy call wrong.

“I saw the tag, but he looked like he oléd him and I called him safe for that,” Meals said. “I looked at the replays and it appeared he might have got him on the shin area. I’m guessing he might have got him, but when I was out there when it happened, I didn’t see a tag.

While some are speculating that the late hour and Meals’ hope for the game to end inspired the blown call, others are pointing to the incident as the latest reason for Major League Baseball to institute more use of instant replay.

Last summer, you’ll recall, Tigers’ pitcher Armando Galarraga infamously lost out on a perfect game after a botched call in the ninth inning, re-igniting the debate over instant replay.
