Coming off a runner-up finish at the Cayman Islands Classic, the Wyoming Cowboys defeated New Mexico Highlands 83-70 Sunday in Laramie.

Wyoming (5-1) made a season-high 13 three-pointers and got those from six different Cowboys.

Head coach Allen Edwards said in a university release they want to continue to build good habits.

“The first unit did a good job of that at the start of the game. Then, we substituted a lot of guys into the game. To start the second half, we challenged the first unit to come out again with that same intensity, and I thought they did a great job defensively and did a really good job of sharing the ball well offensively, as well.”

Alan Herndon and Hayden Dalton scored 16 points apiece to lead the offensive attack. Justin James added 15, while Cody Kelley matched his career-high with 10 points and added a game-high five assists. UW shot 50 percent from the field, which included a season-best 45 percent beyond the arc. Wyoming also dished out a season-high 19 assists and tied a season-high with seven blocked shots.

The Cowboys built a double figure lead midway through the first half, up 21-8. The UW lead was at 34-21 until an 8-0 run by New Mexico Highlands got them back in the game. It was 36-29 Wyoming at half.

The Pokes took control with a 13-2 run at the start of the second half. Herndon scored eight points in that stretch. The lead eventually reached 25 points with just over five minutes left. Highlands finished the game on a 13-1 run for the final margin.

Wyoming is back in action Wednesday night at the Denver Pioneers. The game starts at 7 p.m. and is being televised on Altitude2.
