Dodgers Handle Rockies – MLB Roundup

UNDATED (AP) — The sputtering Detroit Tigers erupted for six runs in the bottom of the ninth against Kansas City on Monday. Problem was, the Tigers trailed by nine when the rally began.

The Royals picked up their eighth straight win by outscoring the first-place Tigers 11-8 in Detroit. Kansas City rocked Justin Verlander for seven runs and 12 hits in six innings, including Omar Infante's (ihn-FAHN'-tayz) three-run homer in the sixth.

Infante had four RBIs, Billy Butler drove in three runs and Alex Gordon and Lorenzo Cain each had three of the Royals' 17 hits. That was more than enough support for Jason Vargas, who is 7-2 after allowing two runs and seven hits in seven innings.

J.D. Martinez hit a grand slam while the Tigers were scoring six runs in the ninth.

Detroit is an American League-worst 9-18 since May 18, allowing the Royals to pull within a half-game of the Central Division leaders.

Elsewhere in the majors:

— Asdrubal (as-DROO'-bul) Cabrera hit a two-run homer, and Carlos Santana added a tiebreaking, solo blast in Cleveland's 4-3 victory against the Angels. Michael Bourn had two hits and scored twice to help the Indians snag their third straight win.

— Rubby (ROO'-bee) De La Rosa allowed just one hit in seven shutout innings to pitch Boston past Minnesota 1-0. The lone run came on A.J. Pierzynski's (peer-ZIHN'-skees) sacrifice fly in the fifth.

— Jerry Sands smacked a tiebreaking, two-run homer in the eighth inning of Tampa Bay's 5-4 verdict over Baltimore. Yunel (yoo-NEHL') Escobar and Ryan Hanigan homered for the Rays, who've won four of five since a 1-14 skid.

— Chris Young was sharp in Seattle's 5-1 win over San Diego, holding his former team to four hits in six shutout innings. Kyle Seager belted a three-run homer and Brad Miller added a solo shot while Seattle was building a 5-0 lead in the first two innings.

— Scooter Gennett hit a solo homer and was among four Brewers with two RBIs in a 9-3 romp over the Diamondbacks in Arizona. Ryan Braun, Aramis (ah-RAH'-mihs) Ramirez and Khris Davis drove in two runs apiece to back Wily Peralta, (WIHL'-ee peh-RAHL'-tah) who worked seven innings for his seventh win.

— Matt Adams and Allen Craig each had two RBIs and Jon Jay scored three times as St. Louis roughed up the New York Mets 6-2. Adams continued his hot streak by going 2-for-4 with an RBI triple after homering his previous three games since coming off the disabled list.

— Reid Brignac's (BRIHN'-yaks) two-run triple capped a five-run 13th inning that gave Philadelphia a 6-1 victory in Atlanta. Freddie Freeman's error led to three unearned runs by the Phillies in the last inning.

— Pitcher Travis Wood came through as a pinch-hitter by lacing a tiebreaking double in the 13th inning of the Cubs' 5-4 win at Miami. Starlin Castro slammed a three-run homer for Chicago.

— Dee Gordon went 4-for-4 and scored twice in the Dodgers' 6-1 win against Colorado. Hyun-Jim Ryu (hee-YUHN'-jihn YOO) is 8-3 after limiting the Rockies to a run and three hits in six innings.

— Donnie Murphy hit two of the Rangers' four home runs in a 14-8 assault on the A's in Oakland. Michael Choice and Robinson Chirinos also homered and had three ribbies for Texas, while Adrian Beltre (BEHL'-tray) drove in three.

UNDATED (AP) — Baltimore Orioles catcher Matt Wieters (WEE'-turz) will undergo season-ending surgery on his right elbow on Tuesday.

Wieters had his ailing elbow examined by Dr. James Andrews on Monday after sitting out since May 10. He was hitting .309 with five home runs and 18 RBIs in 26 games.

— Arizona Diamondbacks right-hander Bronson Arroyo is headed to the disabled list for the first time in his 15-year career. He had gone 369 career starts without a stint on the DL until he developed elbow tendinitis. He is 7-4 with a 4.08 ERA in 14 starts this season.

— The Cleveland Indians have recalled right-hander Mark Lowe from Triple-A Columbus and optioned left-hander T.J. House to the same club. Lowe made four relief appearances with the Indians last month, compiling a 2.08 ERA.

— Miami has signed pitcher Tyler Kolek, the second overall pick in this year's draft. The 6-foot-5, 255-pound Kolek pitched for Shepherd High School in Texas, where his fastball consistently registered in the upper 90s and exceeded 100 mph.
