UNDATED (AP) — The Boston Red Sox were trying to become the first team to win eight straight games immediately after a double-digit losing streak, but they were stopped by one of their former prospects.

Justin Masterson allowed just three singles while striking out a season-high 10 over seven shutout innings of Cleveland's 3-2 win over the Bosox. Masterson retired 12 of his last 13 batters after walking four in the first three frames.

Boston didn't score until Xander Bogaerts (ZAN'-dur BOH'-gahrts) hit a two-run homer in the eighth off Bryan Shaw.

Lonnie Chisenhall hit a two-run single in the first inning of the Indians' fourth straight win.

Also in the majors:

— Clayton Kershaw fanned nine and allowed two runs and just four hits in eight innings of the Dodgers' 5-2 win over the Chicago White Sox in Los Angeles. Justin Turner hit a tiebreaking, two-run single in a five-run sixth after Jose Abreu (ah-BRAY'-oo) smacked a two-run homer in his first game since coming off the White Sox's disabled list.

— Jordy Mercer was hitting .199 before going 4-for-5 with a solo homer, two RBIs and four runs scored in Pittsburgh's 10-3 mauling of the Padres in San Diego. Neil Walker had three hits and three RBIs to back Charlie Morton, who struck out nine while allowing two runs and just three hits in five innings.

— Felix Hernandez is 8-1 after allowing two runs in seven innings of Seattle's 10-2 pounding of the New York Yankees. Kyle Seager was 4-for-5 with a three-run homer and three runs scored, while Michael Saunders added a solo shot and three RBIs.

— Randy Wolf picked up his first victory since 2012 by working six innings of Miami's 3-1 win over Tampa Bay. Wolf allowed a run and three hits as the Marlins dropped the Rays to 0-7 on their eight-game road trip.

— Mark Reynolds belted a two-run homer and Jonathan Lucroy (LOO'-kroy) added a solo blast and two RBIs as Milwaukee whipped Minnesota 6-2. Matt Garza struck out eight and held the Twins to six hits in 6 1/3 scoreless innings.

— Wilmer Flores crushed a grand slam in the ninth inning and finished with a career-high six RBIs as the New York Mets ripped the Phillies 11-2. David Wright and Curtis Granderson drove in two runs apiece for the Mets, who won four times in the five-game series at Philadelphia.

— Danny Duffy worked six innings of one-hit ball and Alex Gordon led off a three-run seventh with a home run as Kansas City earned a 6-0 win over the Cardinals in St. Louis. Shelby Miller had a two-hit shutout until Gordon's blast sparked a string of four-straight hits for the Royals.

UNDATED (AP) — White Sox first baseman Jose Abreu (ah-BRAY'-oo) has been reinstated from the 15-day disabled list after missing 14 games because of tendinitis in his left ankle. Abreu was leading the majors with 15 home runs and ranked second with 42 RBIs before he was sidelined.

Elsewhere in the majors:

— Highly touted Astros prospect Jon Singleton has agreed to a five-year contract and will make his major league debut tonight. Singleton is rated by many as baseball's top first baseman of the future. The 22-year-old was hitting .267 with 14 homers and 43 RBIs for Triple-A Oklahoma City.

— Boston Red Sox shortstop Stephen Drew went 0-for-2 with a walk in his season debut Monday against Cleveland. Drew re-signed with the Red Sox last month after he initially rejected a $14.1 million qualifying offer from them and became a free agent. The World Series champs also placed first baseman Mike Carp on the 15-day disabled list with a broken right foot.

— Second baseman Robinson Cano (kah-NOH') was back in the Seattle Mariners' lineup after missing four games with a bone bruise in his left hand. The M's went 2-2 without Cano, who is hitting .327 with two homers and 31 RBIs in 53 games for his new ball club. Cano had not missed more than three games in a season since 2006, his second in the big leagues.

— Reliever Kevin Gregg is back with the Florida Marlins after agreeing to a minor league contract, pending a physical. Gregg last pitched for the Chicago Cubs last season, going 2-6 with 33 saves and a 3.48 ERA. The right-hander has 177 career saves, including 61 in two seasons with the Marlins.

— The New York Mets have placed center fielder Juan Lagares on the 15-day disabled list with a ribcage injury and recalled outfielder Matt den Dekker from Triple-A Las Vegas. Lagares is hitting .288 with two homers and 18 RBIs.
