Cowgirls Tangle With Fresno State Tonight in Mountain West Semis
LAS VEGAS, Nev., – The No. 2 seed Wyoming Cowgirls will play in the Mountain West Championship Semifinals Tuesday night against No. 6 seed Fresno State at 8:30 Mountain Time.
Tuesday’s game will be broadcast live on the Mountain West Network and can be heard across the Cowgirl Radio Network with David Settle on the call.
ABOUT THE COWGIRLS
Wyoming (21-10) enters the semifinal round off the heels of a 77-64 come-from-behind win in the quarterfinals Monday against Air Force.
The Cowgirls shot a Mountain West Tournament record 60.4-percent (32-53) in the victory and went 19-of-25 in the second half, alone. UW, which is riding a five-game winning streak, has trailed at halftime in four of those five wins.
Allyson Fertig recorded her 13th double-double of the season in the win, scoring a game-high 22 points and grabbing a game-best 13 rebounds. It is Fertig’s 14th 20-point game of the season.
Also in the win, Malene Pedersen had 18 points and made six consecutive shots to close the game. Tess Barnes and Emily Mellema had 15 points each in the contest. Mellema recoded five assists and three steals as well.
Wyoming is now shooting 46.3-percent overall from the floor in 2024-25 and is hitting 34-percent from 3-point range.
The Cowgirls have a plus-3.7 rebounding margin this season and continue to lead the league in scoring defense, allowing just 58.8 points per game. UW has won 10-of-11 games dating back to January 29 and is looking for its second trip to the Mountain West Championship Game in the last three seasons.
With Monday’s win, the Cowgirls improved to 18-24 all-time at the MW tourney.
SCOUTING FRESNO STATE
Fresno State is led by All-Mountain West performer Mia Jacobs, who is second in the league in both scoring (18.3) and rebounding (10.1).
Jacobs is second on the team with 66 made 3-pointers and is shooting a team-best 37.7-percent from beyond-the-arc. Jacobs also leads the team with 67 steals Jacobs is the only Bulldog averaging in double figures this season as Mariah Elohim and Kylee Fox average 9.7 and 9.2 points per game, respectively. Fox leads Fresno with 75 assists this season while Maria Konstantinidou’s 23 blocks are a team high.
The Bulldogs are averaging 63.9 points per game and are allowing 64.8 a contest. Fresno State is shooting 38.6-percent from the field and nearly 34-percent from 3-point range.
Opponents are shooting 41.3-percent overall and 31.6-percent from beyond-the-arc. The Bulldogs shoot an impressive 75.3-percent from the free-throw line and are a minus-1.8 in rebounding margin. Fresno forces its opponents into more turnovers per game this season. Fresno State has won two games to begin the Mountain West Championship.
SERIES HISTORY AGAINST FRESNO STATE
Fresno State leads the series, 22-21. The Cowgirls won the only previous meeting this season, 68-59, in Fresno back in January. Wyoming is 1-3 against the Bulldogs all-time at the Mountain West Championship. The Cowgirls’ lone win came in the title game back in 2021. That was also the last time the two schools met in Las Vegas. UW has won six consecutive and 8-of-9 overall in the series.
