Jay Sawvel Reiterates Trash Talking is ‘Banned Substance’
LARAMIE -- Jay Sawvel said during spring camp trash talking is a "banned substance" on his team.
Wyoming's rookie head coach doubled down during the Cowboys first practice of the fall Wednesday when asked about a skirmish that broke out between wide receiver TK King and top cornerback Tyrecus Davis.
Training camp fights happen. Sawvel understands that aspect but added, "it's got to be brief."
This war of words was anything but.
"It lasted a little too long," he said. "So that'll get addressed. Like I said, I'm not into that."

Sawvel shared a telling anecdote from 2017 when he was the defensive coordinator at Wake Forest. He mentioned that after a game against No. 2 Clemson, one that featured future first round NFL Draft picks like Clelin Ferrell, Christian Wilkins, Dexter Lawrence, Isaiah Simmons and Travis Etienne, one of his biggest takeaways from that 28-14 loss was how the Tigers went about their business.
"They never said a word, they just play," he said. "That's a whole thing we talked to the team about. So, I'm not interested in hearing what you have to say. And the thing is, if you react to what somebody else says to you, then that's when you lose your mind."

Throughout the first seven months as the head man in Laramie, Sawvel has made slight changes to the program he inherited from Craig Bohl, including adding names to the back of jerseys. He warned in April, though, don't mistake his kindness for weakness.
Discipline and accountability is still very much at the forefront.
"There's going to be things people say to you and people do to you. The tough part of it is to go back and play the next play and keep your mind and keep your head to you," Sawvel said. "So that's the expectation. I'm not into all that other crap.
"... I get pissed when somebody says, 'part of my game is talking s---.' OK, well, then you know what? You can talk s--- outside the gate. So, that's the way we do that."
