Wyoming and New Mexico Play to 0-0 draw
LARAMIE -- The University of Wyoming soccer team is in playoff mode following its match Sunday at the Madrid Sports Complex. The Cowgirls tied New Mexico, 0-0, and as a result need a victory in the regular-season finale to have a shot the Mountain West Conference Tournament.
Wyoming holds a 4-6-8 overall record, which includes a 2-3-5 (11 points) mark in conference play. The Lobos are now 7-5-5 on the season and 3-4-3 (12 points) in league action.
“It was a good game, hard fought,” head coach Josh Purdum said. “Sunday games are always tough, being the second game of the weekend. It was an emotional one with our seniors playing their last home game. With the emotions being high, we did a good job keeping a clean sheet. As much as you want to score and win the game, it’s good to get the shutout and see the seniors off on a positive note.”
The game Sunday pitted two squads that are fighting for a top-six spot and the draw played out very evenly. New Mexico owned a 13-10 edge in shots and both teams fired a half dozen shots on target.
Wyoming goalkeeper, Haley Bartel, turned away six shots for her eighth shutout of the season and ninth of her career. New Mexico’s Callie Droitsch made four saves, and the Lobos managed two team saves.
Maddi Chance paced the Cowgirls with three shots, all of which were on frame. Kiley Ballek also fired multiple shots with two, one of which was on target.
As mentioned, both teams are fighting for a top-six spot and a ticket to the conference tournament. In order for Wyoming to advance, it must win its match at Colorado State on Thursday and get some help.
