Wyoming Cowboys in the NFL: Week 4
LARAMIE -- Treyton Welch said after his NFL Pro Day back in the spring of 2024 that he was simply attempting to put one foot in front of the other.
Wyoming's 6-foot-3, 241-pound tight end said he wasn't upset about not getting a shot to show his talents at the combine. Ever faithful, he put it all in God's hands.
"He's got me where He wants me," Welch said that March inside the Cowboys' indoor practice facility. "There's a purpose and a reason for that. I think I've given my all in the five years I've been here and tried to put everything I can on film."
Welch capped his collegiate career with 874 yards and nine touchdowns on 77 catches. He appeared in 50 games, never missing one start over his last three seasons in Laramie.
The Minnesota native faced plenty of adversity during his five-year stint, from a stagnant passing attack to a world-wide pandemic.
He handled it all with grace. And it prepared him for what he was about to face in the big leagues.
After being signed as an undrafted free agent by the Cleveland Browns in '24, Welch was inked by New Orleans. Since arriving in the Big Easy, he has bounced back and forth between the waiver wires and the practice squad. After initially making the 53-man roster out of training camp, he was almost immediately cut. That didn't last long.
Welch was on the field for a career-high 19 snaps Monday night in the Saints' 45-24 loss to Atlanta in the Mercedes Superdome. A dozen of those came on special teams. He was also targeted once in the passing game.
For the season, Welch has played 47 snaps, 22 on offense and 25 on special teams for the 1-3 Saints. New Orleans hosts Welch's hometown Vikings in Week 5.
