September 9-10, the six will compete to become the Youth of the Year, which also comes with a $7,500 scholarship from the BGGCW Foundation, endowed by the late Ruth R. Ellbogen.

Youth of the Year, established nationally in 1947, is Boys & Girls Clubs of America’s premier recognition program for teen members. It honors youth who excel in leadership, service, and academics, while preparing them with practical skills in communication, teamwork, and goal setting that are vital for success in today’s world.

The Youth of the Year contestants are all over 14 years old, have been members of the club for more than two years, have a strong character, and are good students.

These are included in the competition.

  • Written Application.
  • Personal Essay.
  • Speech Presentation.
  • Panel Interview.

Derek DeBoer, Vice President of Operations for BGGCW, explains the impact of Youth of the Year.

Youth of the Year is more than a recognition, it is an investment in the future. These finalists demonstrate the results of hard work, resilience, and the life-changing impact of having a safe place, trusted mentors, and opportunities to lead.

The winner will be announced at the 27th Annual Awards & Recognition Breakfast, honoring former U.S. Congresswoman Barbara Cubin, on September 17, 2025, at the Ford Wyoming Center. The Youth of the Year will advance to the Wyoming State Youth of the Year competition in Cheyenne and receive a $7,500 scholarship. The runner-up will receive $3,500, and the remaining four finalists will each be awarded $500.
