Are You Excited Wyoming High School Football Is Back?
Football is back and in full swing. A new trend that's been going on the last few years is what they're calling 'Week Zero'. A select number of games are played, before everyone else begins the regular season.
In Wyoming, the small population takes a toll on some of the smaller schools when it comes to playing football. Luckily for the kids in those schools that want to play, there are a couple different options.
11 man football is what is played at the majority of the schools
This football is also what you see when you're watching the University of Wyoming in college and the Denver Broncos in the NFL.
There's also a couple other options in Wyoming.
9 man - The rules vary from state to state, but here's how it goes in Wyoming (16 Teams in Wyoming)
Wyoming 9 man teams play on the same size field as the 11 man teams 100 yd x 53 1/3 yd field.
Offenses have to have 5 players on the line and 4 in the backfield when the ball is snapped. Everyone is eligible except for the center and 2 guards.
6 man - The rules and field are even more varied (11 teams in Wyoming)
The fast moving, high scoring, 6 man football is played on a 80 yd x 40yd field. On offense, all 6 players are eligible to catch the ball. The 3 linemen have to be on the line of scrimmage when the play begins, but can then move to a position to catch the ball. The person that receives the snap from center, isn't allowed to run the ball beyond the line of scrimmage...unless the player tosses the ball to another player, then they can catch the ball and advance it.
The scoring in 6 man is a little different too.
Touchdown = 6 points
Point after touchdown kick = 2 points
Running or passing attempt after touchdown = 1 point
Field Goal attempt = 4 points
No matter the type of football your team plays, football season is here. Get out and support them all.
