WATCH: Bison Rutting Season In Full Swing At Yellowstone

When a couple of big Wyoming bison decide to mix it up in a Yellowstone campground, get out of the way. These guys are trying to prove themselves so they can mate with the ladies. A lot of dust is going to be kicked up.

If you want to shoot a video, fine, but do it from a distance. I mean a big distance. The guys are in a mood, and they will chase anything down to fight with it, including cars.

Bison rutting season takes place from June through September, with peak activity occurring in July and August. That would mean RIGHT NOW! During this intense period, male bulls join the female herds, leading to high activity, dramatic fights, and deep booming bellows. It hurts just watching these guys.

This can be a fight to the death. Bison can and do kill each other during the rut. Spiked testosterone makes bulls extremely aggressive. Imagine massive 2,000-pound collisions, cracked ribs, and fatal gorings. GET OUT OF THE WAY!

Listen for guttural growling sounds, snorting, and watch for rolling around in the dirt and digging the ground with the front hooves. These are a few of the signs that the bull is feeling it and wants to hurt somebody.

The National Park Service says you must stay at least 25 yards (75 feet) away from bison at all times. But you might want to stand more clear than that. They have been known to chase people for long distances, and they are a heck of a lot faster than they look. They are much faster than you, for sure.
