The Sweetwater County Sheriff's Office is investigating a Saturday night shooting north of Rock Springs that left two people injured.

That's according to a release from the Sweetwater County Sheriff's Office.

According to the release, the incident happened at an impromptu gathering in the ghost town of Winton, an abandoned mining town about 5 miles north-northeast of Rock Springs just outside of Reliance.

Shooting Resulted In ''Significant Injuries"

People say the alleged shooter is a juvenile, so they are withholding some details of the case, including the names of the two people who were injured. The agency only identifies the pair as young adults. The release says both victims suffered "significant injuries." One was treated at a local hospital, the other was transported to Utah for further medical care.

The release says the incident was reported around 11:30 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 1 near an area known as "the pits." A bonfire had been set up and a group of juveniles and young adults was socializing. Exactly what the circumstances of the incident were have so far not been released.

Sheriff John Grossnickle is quoted in the release as saying “We routinely patrol these desert parties, but by the time we get wind of one, word spreads, and they change locations,” Grossnickle said. “That makes intervening incredibly difficult before something goes wrong, like it did on Saturday night.”

No arrests have been made, and sheriff's office spokesman Jason Mower says there is not believed to be any threat to public safety.
