Despite a career-high 26 points from senior guard Derrious Gilmore, the Wyoming Cowboys couldn't overcome another tough shooting night. They lost at rival Colorado State, 65-46, Saturday night in Mountain West Conference action at Moby Arena. Wyoming shot 29 percent from the field and dropped their fourth straight game, as they reached the halfway point of conference play.

Gilmore knocked down a career-high six threes in the game and scored 20-plus points for the third time this season, as he kept the Cowboys in the game. At one point in the second half, he scored 16-straight points over a seven minute stretch. The Rams led from the opening tip and never gave up the lead to win its 26th-consecutive game at home.

“Once [Derrious] did knock in a couple, the way they were playing the ball screen, we felt like that would be our best look,” UW head coach Larry Shyatt said. “We had wanted to go more so in to Leonard and Larry, but with that piece missing we thought that was the best way for us to get some shots.”

After closing the first half on a 7-0 spurt, the Rams continued the run to start the second half and extended to a 36-21 lead. CSU pushed the lead to 16 before Gilmore scored 16-consecutive points for the Cowboys to pull them within eight, 48-40, at the 8:12 mark. The Cowboys were able to cut the lead to single digits twice more, but the Rams closed the game on a 12-1 run for the victory.

Wyoming (15-6, 2-6) has no other players score in double figures. Leonard Washington chipped in nine points and four rebounds, while sophomore forward Derek Cooke Jr. pulled down a career-high 11 rebounds and added three points in a career-high 22 minutes.

Colorado State (18-4, 5-2) opened the game on a 10-3 run over the first five minutes, but the Pokes hung tough despite their offensive woes. They trailed 23-21 late in the first half before the Rams went on the spurt to close the half and led 30-21 at the break.

The Rams had five players in double figures led by Dorian Green with 15 points. They shot almost 47 percent from the field and out-rebounded UW 42-28.

The Cowboys will step out of conference on Wednesday for a trip to Bakersfield, Calif., to take on the CSU Bakersfield Road Runners. Tip time is set for 8 p.m. MT. You can listen to Wyoming basketball on Y95 Country. Coverage will start at 7:30 p.m.
