Rockies Edge Giants 5-4 – MLB Roundup For Aug. 29th

UNDATED (AP) — The Athletics' are dominating the Tigers in Detroit. Following Wednesday night's 14-4 route the A's have won the first three games of their four-game series in the Motor City. Oakland has outscored the Tigers 28-13 in the first three games of the series. In Wednesday's win Brandon Moss homered twice and drove in a career-high six runs. Moss has three home runs in his past two games for Oakland, which had a season-high 21 hits.

—Jay Bruce homered and drove in five runs as the Reds got a dominant effort from Homer Bailey to beat the St. Louis Cardinals and Adam Wainwright 10-0 and avoid a three-game sweep. The Cardinals lead the National League Central by a half-game over the Pirates after losing for the third time in 12 games. The Reds are in third, 3½ games back.

—Newly acquired Marlon Byrd has paid immediate dividends for the Pirates. He celebrated his arrival in Pittsburgh with a three-run homer as the Pirates beat the Brewers 7-1. Byrd, acquired along with catcher John Buck from the New York Mets on Tuesday, hit his 22nd homer of the season into the bushes in center field in the seventh inning as Pittsburgh ended a three-game losing streak.

— Chris Johnson singled to left with two outs in the ninth inning for his first career walk-off hit and the Atlanta Braves beat visiting Cleveland 3-2. Jordan Schafer drove in Atlanta's first two runs, then scored the winner after reaching on an infield single and stealing his second base of the night. The Braves improved to 46-18 at Turner Field, the best home record in the majors. Mike Aviles homered and drove in both Cleveland runs.

— Boston won its fourth straight with a 4-3 win over Baltimore. Pinch hitter Mike Carp's bloop single to left in the eighth inning dropped just beyond the glove of Baltimore third baseman Manny Machado, scoring Jarrod Saltalamacchia (sahl-tah-lah-MAH'-kee-ah) from second base with the tiebreaking run. Chris Davis hit his major league-leading 47th homer and added an RBI double for Baltimore, which lost for the sixth time in its last eight games.

— Chris Sale struck out 12 over eight-plus innings and Avisail Garcia hit a three-run homer to lead the Chicago White Sox to a 6-1 win over the Houston Astros. Garcia finished with three hits for the White Sox, who have won 10 of their last 12 games.

— The Royals have won four straight after beating the Twins 8-1. Salvador Perez had four hits and two home runs in the win. The Twins struck out 10 times and set the club record for strikeouts in a season with 31 games to go.

—Jhoulys Chacin (joh-LEES' cha-SEEN') toyed with a no-hit bid before losing it in the seventh inning in a Rockies 5-4 win over the Giants. He left the game after seven but got the win, his 13th of the season.

— The Blue Jays completed a series against the Yankees with another win. Edwin Encarnacion (en-kar-nah-see-OHN') hit a two-run home run, rookie Todd Redmond snapped a seven-start winless streak and the Jays beat New York 7-2. Toronto took two out of three from the Yankees after losing 12 of their first 13 meetings this season. They're 3-3 against New York at home and 0-10 on the road.

— Chris Archer pitched seven strong innings, David DeJesus scored twice and the Tampa Bay Rays beat the Angels 4-1. The loss put an end to the Angels four-game winning streak. The 8-5 Archer allowed one run and five hits while striking out five. He breezed through the first six innings, scattering three singles and facing 20 batters, only two over the minimum. Fernando Rodney pitched the ninth, striking out two for his 31st save.

—Cole Hamels pitched seven strong innings and the Phillies beat the Mets 6-2. Hamels hit a two-run single to help Philadelphia improve to 8-5 under interim manager Ryne Sandberg. Recently acquired Daisuke Matsuzaka (DYS'-kay maht-soo-ZAH'-kah) labored through 4 1-3 innings on Japanese Heritage Night in his second start for the Mets, who have dropped six of seven.

— The visiting Padres beat the Diamondbacks 5-1. The Padres broke the game open with three runs in the eighth inning.

In afternoon play, Ricky Nolasco pitched eight innings of three-hit ball to lead the Dodgers to a 4-0 win over the Cubs in Los Angeles. Nolasco equaled a season high with 11 strikeouts and improved to 6-1 in 10 starts for the Dodgers since being acquired from Miami. Hanley Ramirez and Andre Ethier (EE-thee-ur) hit solo homers for the NL West-leading Dodgers who earned their 21st victory in August, tying the Los Angeles record for most wins in a calendar month.

And the visiting Rangers got the better of Felix Hernandez and the Mariners in a 12-4 victory. Leonys Martin homered and drove in a career-high four runs for the American League West leading Rangers. Former Cy Young Award winner Hernandez, who is now 12-8, gave up nine runs and 11 hits in three-plus innings. His earned run average jumped from 2.63 to 2.97.

ATLANTA (AP) — Cleveland Indians outfielder Ryan Raburn has been placed on the 15-day disabled list with a strained left Achilles. He had missed 10 of the previous 11 games because of soreness in his left foot. He was hitting .270 with 15 homers and 41 RBIs in 70 games.

PHOENIX (AP) — San Diego Padres outfielder Carlos Quentin will have surgery on his right knee and is done for the season. He has been on the disabled list since Aug. 10 with a strained knee and will have surgery in the next week or so to clean out loose fragments and scar tissue. It will be his third operation on the knee in 18 months.
