Catcher Kurt Suzuki's throwing error allowed Alfonso Soriano to score the go-ahead run in the ninth inning as the Chicago Cubs beat Washington 2-1. Nationals starter Gio Gonzalez opened the game with five perfect innings and tossed a two-hitter over seven shutout frames before the Nationals' bullpen blew a 1-0 lead.

Homers by Pablo Sandoval, Brandon Belt and Marco Scutaro (SKOO'-tah-roh) supported Tim Lincecum (LIHN'-she-kuhm) in San Francisco's 5-1 win over Atlanta. Lincecum struck out seven and gave up just two hits in seven shutout innings to help the Giants finish 7-3 on their 10-game homestand.

Ryan Howard was in an 0-for-18 slump before hitting a two-run single in the 10th inning to lift Philadelphia over Arizona 4-2. The Diamondbacks were two outs away from a 2-0 win until Delmon Young hit an RBI double and scored on Domonic Brown's game-tying single.

UNDATED (AP) — What a difference a year makes. The Houston Astros have designated pitcher Philip Humber (UM'-buhr) for assignment, a day after he gave up five runs while only getting two outs in a loss to the Texas Rangers.

Humber is just a year removed from pitching the 21st perfect game in major league history. But he's had a terrible start to 2013, going 0-8 with a 9.59 ERA.
