UNDATED (AP) — The Los Angeles Angels have ended an eight game winning streak by blowing a five-run lead in the opener of the Freeway Series.

Adrian Gonzalez went 4-for-4 and scored four times as the Dodgers downed the Halos 8-7. Jerry Hairston provided the tiebreaking single in the bottom of the seventh, three innings after the Angels scored three runs to take a 6-1 lead.

Mark Ellis and Scott Van Slyke each had two RBIs for the Dodgers.

Arizona took a pair from Texas.

Tyler Skaggs struck out nine while allowing three hits in six shutout innings of the Diamondbacks' 5-3 victory against the Rangers in Game 1 of a day-night doubleheader. Skaggs shut down one of baseball's best lineups after being recalled from Triple-A Reno.

The Diamondbacks took the nightcap 5-4 on Cliff Pennington's RBI single in the bottom of the ninth. The Rangers led 4-2 until Didi Gregorius belted a two-run homer in the eighth.

In other major league play:

— Daniel Murphy hit a two-out, RBI single to snap a 1-1 tie in the eighth inning and give the Mets a 2-1 win over the Yankees. David Wright tied the game with a solo homer in the seventh after Yankees starter Phil Hughes carried a three-hit shutout into the inning.

— Dustin Pedroia (peh-DROY'-uh) hit a two-run homer and Mike Napoli (NAP'-oh-lee) added a solo shot in the first inning of Boston's 9-3 romp over Philadelphia. Alfredo Aceves (ah-SHE'-vehs) held the Phillies a run and seven hits in six innings.

— Edwin Encarnacion (ehn-kahr-nah-see-OHN') went 2-for-5 with a three-run homer and five RBIs as Toronto crushed Atlanta 9-3. Colby Rasmus and J.P. Arencibia (ar-ehn-SEE'-bee-uh) each hit two-run homers to support Mark Buehrle (BUR'-lee), who allowed a run and five hits in six innings for his first victory in eight starts.

— Joey Votto's (VAH'-tohz) two-run homer in the eighth inning snapped a 2-2 tie in Cincinnati's 4-2 win over Cleveland. Shin-Soo Choo also homered against his former team and also scored the go-ahead run on Votto's ninth homer of the season.

— Jason Hammel improved to 7-2 by scattering eight hits while striking out eight over eight innings of the Orioles' 6-2 win at Washington. Yamaico Navarro and Nick Markakis (mahr-KAY'-kihs) drove in two runs each to highlight the Orioles' 15-hit attack.

— Justin Verlander struck out 13 in seven innings to lead Detroit over Pittsburgh 6-5. Jhonny (JAH'-nee) Peralta had four hits and drove in three runs to back Verlander.

— Yadier Molina homered and drove in four runs to pace St. Louis to a 6-3 win over Kansas City. Adam Wainwright gave up 12 hits but just three runs in eight innings to improve to 7-3.

— Joe Mauer had a double ruled a home run after video review and Minnesota went on to double up Milwaukee 6-3. Chris Parmelee's solo homer in the eighth put the Twins up 6-3.

— Josh Donaldson hit a two-run homer and Dan Straily silenced San Francisco's bats to lead Oakland's 4-1 win over the Giants. Straily gave up a run and four hits in six innings, blanking the Giants until Buster Posey's RBI grounder in the sixth.

— Kelly Johnson has 24 RBIs in 21 games this month after launching a pair of three-run homers in Tampa Bay's 10-6 rout of Florida. Johnson went 4-for-6 with a stolen base as the Rays handed the Marlins their sixth straight loss.

— Jason Bay hit his first career leadoff homer before Michael Morse added a three-run blast that put Seattle ahead 4-0 in the first inning of a 9-0 pounding of San Diego. Aaron Harang struck out eight and went the distance on a four-hitter to help the Mariners win their second straight since an eight-game skid.

— Brandon Barnes hit an RBI double in the bottom of the 12th to complete Houston's 3-2 victory against Colorado. The Rockies led 2-0 until Carlos Pena laced a two-run double in the fourth inning.

— The Chicago Cubs were 7-0 winners over the White Sox behind Jeff Samardzia (sah-MAHR'-juh), who fired a two-hitter in the Cubs' first complete game since Aug. 29, 2011. Julio Borbon (bohr-BOHN') socked a two-run homer for the Cubs.
