Scott Carter Earns Bronze Medal at NCAA Championships

Scott Carter’s illustrious career at the University of Wyoming concluded with a bronze medal and First Team All-American honor last Friday.

At the 2017 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships, Carter had an impressive first leap of 53 feet, 3.5 inches, which led to a third-place finish in the triple jump.

Carter became the 60th All-American in Cowboy history. His third place was the highest since 2000, when Jason Gervais was runner-up in the hammer throw. He’s the first All-American triple jumper since Carter’s event coach, Quincy Howe, earned the distinction in 2002.

Wyoming track and field head coach Bryan Berryhill said in a release from UW,

“He’s just been so dedicated over the past five years. He’s extremely passionate about the sport. He’s put everything together this last month. It’s hard to make it here for the first time and get third. For him to come here in the electric environment t and huge crowd and to go out there with the best jumpers in the world and get third is pretty impressive.”

Carter came within three-quarters of an inch of his personal record (53’-4.25”) set last month in Fort Collins.

It’s the first time since 2004 that both a Cowboy and Cowgirl achieved outdoor All-American status.

Fellow Wyoming senior Audra DeStefano placed 21st in the 3000 meter steeplechase last Thursday. She earned Honorable Mention All-American honors.
