Sheriff: Natrona County Sex Offenders Targeted in Phone Scam
In a twist on a common phone scam, registered sex offenders are being targeted by callers soliciting money.
According to a statement from the Natrona County Sheriff's Office, scammers have been calling local sex offenders and falsely identifying themselves as sheriff's deputies.
The scammers proceed to tell the sex offender that they failed to register, resulting in an active warrant for their arrest. However, the scammer says, the warrant can be cleared if the sex offender pays for the warrant over the telephone.
The sheriff's office reminds the public that law enforcement officers do not call people who are wanted on an active warrant, nor do officers solicit money.
The sheriff's office asks anyone who receives this type of scam call to not give out any financial or personal information and end the call immediately.
