1911 — Cy Young of the Boston Rustlers faced Christy Mathewson of the New York Giants in a duel of all-time great pitchers. The Giants won 9-0 in Boston. (More info.)

1951 — Bloodied and nearly-beaten, Sugar Ray Robinson scored a technical knockout of Randy Turpin in the 10th round of their fight to regain the world middleweight championship at the Polo Grounds in New York. (More info.)

1979 — The Indiana Pacers cut Ann Meyers, the first woman ever invited to an NBA rookie camp. (More info.)

1979 — Carl Yastrzemski of the Boston Red Sox collected his 3,000th major league hit by singling off Jim Beattie in a 9-2 victory over the New York Yankees at Fenway Park. (More info.)

1984 — Dwight Gooden, 19, of the New York Mets set a major league record for strikeouts by a rookie pitcher while fanning 16 Pittsburgh Pirates in a 2-0 win at Shea Stadium. Gooden finished the game with a total of 251 strikeouts on the season, six more than Herb Score of the Cleveland Indians recorded in 1955. (More info.)
