1911 — Cy Young of the Boston Braves beat the Pirates at Forbes Field in Pittsburgh for his 511th and final victory, still a major league record. (More info.)

1927 — Gene Tunney decisioned Jack Dempsey in the ‘Long Count’ fight at Soldier Field in Chicago to retain the heavyweight championship. Fighting in the first match to implement the neutral corner rule after a knockdown, Dempsey floored Tunney in the seventh round but did not immediately back away, allowing the champ to stay on the canvas for apparently longer than 10 seconds and get to his feet to rally. 1969 — Willie Mays of the San Francisco Giants became just the second player to hit 600 home runs when he connected off Mike Corkins of the San Diego Padres at Jack Murphy Stadium. (More info.)

1977 — Bert Blyleven of the Texas Rangers no-hit the California Angels, 6-0, at Anaheim Stadium. (More info.)

1987 — NFL players called their second strike in five years, leading the owners to use replacement players for three weeks of the season. (More info.)

1988 — South Korean boxing coaches attacked a referee from New Zealand after a disputed decision at the Summer Olympics in Seoul. Korean boxer Byun Jong Il sat in the ring for 67 minutes in protest after being declared the loser of the match. (More info.)
