WHSAA Winter 2018 Board Of Directors Meeting Results
Adjusting reclassification for wrestling, cross-country and golf, as well as redefining the combination school agreements, 3A Swimming and 3A Soccer were some of the topics of discussion at the Winter 2018 Wyoming High School Activities Association Board Of Directors Meeting.
Cross Country: In order to be consistent with volleyball, basketball and outdoor track and field, starting in Fall 2018, the top 16 schools based on 2-year enrollment will be 4A, the next 15 in 3A and the rest in 2A. Motion passes first reading. Must undergo another reading in April to become official.
Golf: In order to be consistent with volleyball, basketball and outdoor track and field, starting in Fall 2018, the top 16 schools based on 2-year enrollment will be 4A, the next 13 in 3A and the rest in 2A. Motion defeated.
Wrestling: In order to be consistent with volleyball, basketball and outdoor track and field, starting in December 2018, the top 16 school based on 2-year enrollment will be 4A, the next 16 in 3A and the rest in 2A. Motion defeated.
3A Soccer: Starting in spring 2019, there will be 11 teams in 3A. The proposal is to do away with the quadrants and just have East (Buffalo, Douglas, Newcastle, Rawlins, Torrington) and West conferences (Cody, Powell, Worland, Pinedale, Riverton and Lander). Teams must play each other twice during the regular season. There will be no regional tournaments or play-in games. The top 4 in the East and West at the end of the regular season, advance to the state tournament. Motion passes on first reading. Must undergo another reading in April to become official.
Combination School agreement: The larger of the 2 schools must be the host, starting in Fall 2018, except for football, which will start in Fall 2020. This will force Upton-Sundance to Class 2A. Motion passes on first reading. Must undergo another reading in April to become official.
3A Swimming: The proposal is to have both boys and girls swimming compete in the winter season. One purpose is to save travel costs and another is to help those teams that are struggling with numbers. Motion defeated.
State Golf 2019: 4A will be in Gillette, 3A in Star Valley and 2A in Lusk. It is their respective turns in the rotation.
State Cross Country: Star Valley will host for 2 years starting in 2019. Cheyenne, Sheridan and Wheatland also put in bids.
State Soccer: Cheyenne will host for 2 years starting in 2020. Rock Springs, Green River, Jackson and Sheridan also put in bids.
