San Francisco beat Detroit 8-3 in game one of the World Series on the west coast Wednesday night. The Giants roughed up Tiger pitcher Justin Verlander for 5 runs and 6 hits in just 4 innings. San Francisco's Pablo Sandoval put his name into the record book by hitting 3 home runs in a single World Series game. The only other players to do that were Babe Ruth twice in 1925 and '27, Reggie Jackson in 1977 and Albert Puhols last year. Game 2 of the World Series will be tonight.

More troubles for the University of Wyoming athletic department. Men's basketball player Shakir Smith and wrestler Patrick Martinez have been kicked off their respective  teams after being arrested in Laramie last month. Smith was charged with larceny and Martinez with conspiracy to commit larceny. This was not Smith's first run in with the law. He was also arrested in the same incident that involved Cowboy basketball player Leonard Washington. Martinez was one othe better Cowboy wrestlers, qualifying for the NCAA National Tournament last season.

The Wyoming State High School Volleyball Tournaments begin today at the Casper Events Center. First round matches begin at 3:00pm. Complete schedules for all four classes available at wyopreps.com

High School football playoffs begin with quarterfinal action on Friday. Natrona will play host to Rock Springs. The top ranked Mustangs (9-0) wrapped up a undefeated regular season with a 20-17 win over Gillette last Friday night. The Tigers are 2-7. Kickoff is at 6:00pm at Mustang Stadium. Kelly Walsh hits the road and will be at Sheridan Friday night. The Trojans (4-5) are the sixth seed in the playoffs.The Broncs (7-2) who won the 4A state title last year is the third seed.
