Two people are dead following a head-on crash between a minivan and an SUV inside Grand Teton National Park.

The crash was reported at roughly 2:15 p.m. Tuesday on U.S. Highway 89, roughly half a mile north of the Jackson Hole Airport Junction.

One person was declared dead at the scene, according to park officials. Another was declared dead at St. John's Medical Center.

A number of other people involved in the crash were treated at the scene and then taken to the hospital.

As of 4:45 p.m., the highway was expected to remain closed until the early evening or later. Detours are available via Antelope Flats Road from the north and Gros Ventre Road from the south. Access to the airport is available via the southern detour.

The National Park Service and Wyoming Highway Patrol are investigating the crash.

Park rangers were assisted by state troopers, Jackson Hole Fire/EMS, the Teton County Sheriff's Office and the Federal Highway Administration.

Teton County Coroner Dr. Brent Blue told K2 Radio News that no further details regarding the two who died could immediately be released, pending notification of family.
