A Gillette man is dead following a single-vehicle rollover crash on Interstate 90 early Tuesday.

Matthew N. Schmaljohn, 27, died at the scene at milepost 141. He was not wearing his seatbelt, according to a statement from Sgt. Jeremy Beck of the Wyoming Highway Patrol.

Schmaljohn was driving a 2001 Dodge Ram eastbound at roughly 6:45 a.m. Tuesday when he left I-90 via Exit 141. There, the pickup truck drifted off the left side of the roadway before Schmaljohn overcorrected back to the right shoulder, where the Dodge overturned.

Driver inattention and fatigue are being investigated as possible contributing factors.

Schmaljohn is the 39th person to die on Wyoming highways in 2019. By this point last year, 22 highway deaths had been reported statewide, compared to 27 fatalities in 2017 and 12 to date in 2016.
