IOC MEETINGS

IOC drops wrestling from 2020 Olympics

LAUSANNE, Switzerland (AP) — Leaders of the International Olympic Committee have dropped wrestling for the 2020 Games.

The surprise decision removes one of the oldest Olympic sports.

The IOC executive board, meeting in Switzerland, decided Tuesday to retain modern pentathlon — the event considered most at risk — and remove wrestling instead from its list of core sports.

The IOC board acted after reviewing the 26 sports on the current Olympic program. Eliminating one sport allows the International Olympic Committee to add a new sport to the program later this year.

Wrestling, which combines freestyle and Greco-Roman events, goes back to the inaugural modern Olympics in Athens in 1896.

SOC-POLITICAL BANNER

AP Source: SKorean to get Olympic medal back

LAUSANNE, Switzerland (AP) — An official familiar with the decision says a South Korea soccer player who displayed a political banner after a match at the London Olympics will receive his bronze medal.

The official says the IOC executive board will issue a warning to Park Jong-woo for his actions after his team's 2-0 victory over Japan.

The official spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the ruling hadn't been announced.

The IOC withheld Park's medal after Aug. 10, pending a disciplinary hearing, which was held Monday in Lausanne.

Park displayed a sign in national colors with the slogan "Dokdo is our territory" to support South Korean sovereignty over islets also claimed by Japan.

IOC rules prohibit on-field political statements.

FIFA previously banned Park for two World Cup matches.

DOPING IN SPORTS

WADA urges soccer to conduct more EPO tests

LONDON (AP) — The World Anti-Doping Agency is urging soccer to conduct more blood doping tests and intelligence operations to unmask cheating players.

WADA Director General David Howman warned on Tuesday that "team sports players can go their entire career without being tested."

WADA President John Fahey added that soccer is not testing enough for blood-boosting EPO.

Last week, Spain's anti-doping agency announced it was examining claims by a former president of a Spanish team, Real Sociedad, that its players used performance-enhancing substances.

Fahey also urged soccer to "use intelligence" after highlighting its importance to building a case against Lance Armstrong.

Fahey says sport must be "alert to the increasingly sophisticated science available to athletes today and to the growing influence of the underworld."

BRAZIL OPEN-NADAL

Nadal says ATP not concerned about players' health

SAO PAULO (AP) — Rafael Nadal says the ATP is not doing enough to protect players' health, claiming the increased number of tournaments on hard courts will lead to long-term injuries and affect players after they retire.

Nadal is in Brazil to play his second tournament after a seven-month layoff to recover from a left-knee injury. He lost in the final in Chile last week.

Nadal says leaders of the men's tour aren't thinking of ways to lengthen players' careers.

He says tennis is the only major sport where players are forced to play on cement, and it's a health issue that must involve doctors and players.
