Pickleball is one of the fastest growing sports in America. What is it? According to the USA Pickleball Association, it's a fun game played on a badminton court with the net lowered to 34 inches at the center. It is played with a perforated plastic baseball (similar to a whiffle ball) and wood or composite paddles. Pickleball players say it's easy for beginners to learn, but can develop into a quick, fast-paced, competitive game for experienced players.

The Casper Recreation Center is hosting pickleball group play Tuesdays and Thursdays from September 18 through November 1, 2012 from 10:00 am-11:00 am. The group is for players of all levels. The registration fee is only $10 for 8 weeks and all 16 sessions. Registrations must be received at the Casper Recreation Center, 1801 East 4th Street, by September 18. Phone-in registration is available with a credit card at 235-8383. The group is open to males and females of all ages. Nets, balls, and paddle (limited number) are provided.

The first week of the program will include a “how to play clinic” with instruction on the basic rules of the game provided by the 2012 Wyoming and Colorado Senior Olympics Champion. The group will include drop in play on Tuesdays and scheduled matchups on Thursdays. A doubles tournament with fun prizes for participants will wrap the program up, with doubles pairings formed from participants.

Additionally, Casper will host the Wyoming Senior Olympics in July of 2013. Pickleball was the most popular event in this year’s Senior Games. Play now to prepare and participate in the 2013 Senior Games or just to meet other players.
