As the Cowboys get ready for the season opener at Texas on Saturday Sept. 1st, they find out they will be one running short. Kody Sutton had decided to quit the team for personal reasons.

He was number two on the depth chart behind Brandon Miller. Sutton had 30 carries for 146 yards with one touchdown, that coming in the New Mexico Bowl loss to Temple. Sutton was a sophomore and his departure creates a slight depth issue at the running back spot, especially after Alvester Alexander elected to leave school early and join the NFL draft. He was recently signed by the Indianapolis Colts. The Pokes scrimmage tomorrow morning at 10 at Memorial Stadium will consist of some 150 plays. For Coach Dave Christensen says improvement will be the key to the scrimmage.

In the NFL, Denver Bronco lineback D.J. Williams did not practice yesterday, a day after being convicted of driving while impaired after an incident in November. Williams is already facing a six game suspension after failing an off season drug test and more games maybe tacked on to that suspension. Williams has been the Broncos leading tackler in five of his eight seasons with Denver.

The Colorado Rockies made it four in a row with a 5-3 win over Miami Thursday night at Coors Field. Michael Cuddyer who was just activated from the disabled list homered in the game. D.J. Lamahieu had two hits for the Rockies. Game two of that series with the Marlins will be tonight.

In local golf, it's the start of the Dakota Tour pro event at the Paradise Valley Country Club. This is a pro event but also a Pro-Am, so one professional plays with three amateurs for the first two days and then individual on Sunday.
