The University of Wyoming Board of Trustees has selected an acting university president, just over a month before the current president's contract is set to expire.

Vice President for Finance and Administration Neil Theobald previously worked as president at Temple University. The trustees selected him as the interim president during a teleconference meeting Monday morning.

Also considered were Bill Mai, a former UW vice president, and Chris Boswell, who is a former state lawmaker and university lobbyist.

President Laurie Nichols plans to become a faculty member at UW when her contract expires June 30. The trustees decided to not renew her contract.

Nichols began her term as UW president in 2016. The trustees have offered little justification for firing Nichols.

Nichols's husband, Tim Nichols, recently accepted a job leading the honors college at the University of Montana.
