BREAKING: Casper Police, Fire Find Scores of Animals in Residence

Casper Police, Metro Animal Control and Casper Fire-EMS found as many as 80 dogs, cats and birds living in deplorable conditions at a Casper residence on Wednesday.

No one has been arrested as of Wednesday afternoon, and police are not releasing the identity of the woman, the sole occupant, who lives at the residence in the 1200 block of West 23rd Street.

Police department spokeswoman Rebekah Ladd said police had received a couple of reports of animal feces around a residence.

Wednesday morning, police executed a search warrant at the residence, Ladd said.

"When we showed up we expected to rescue a handful of animals from the residence and we ended up finding an estimated 40 to 50 dogs, 15 to 20 cats, and about 10 birds, which be believe to be macaws," she said.

The house had dirt, debris, animal feces, litter scattered throughout, Ladd said. "We've got animal cages stacked side by side."

She was not aware of any deceased animals, she said.

The Natrona County District Attorney's Office was at the residence, but it was unknown if any charges will be filed, Ladd said. Possible charges could include animal cruelty and possession of too many animals.

"With any situation where you've got this many animals living in an unsanitary and unhealthy condition, you have to look at how do we prevent this from happening in the future," she said.

Metro Animal Control already is busy in the summer with animals having litters, and this kind of incident will further strain their resources, Ladd said. "This is definitely going to send them over the edge."

The city benefits from the shelter, she said, "but this is going to stretch them thin."
