Five Wyoming Basketball Players Earn All-Mountain West Accolades
Four Wyoming Cowgirls and one Wyoming Cowboy received the distinction of being named to the 2013 Mountain West All-Conference teams that were released by the league office Monday evening. Senior Chaundra Sewell leads the honor parade, as she earned All-Mountain West First Team honors for the 2012-13 season.
Wyoming head coach Joe Legerski said, “We always talk that without team success there is not individual success. We’ve had a tremendous season with 23 wins and individually our players have been recognized by the league’s coaches. I’m proud of the honors bestowed to Chaundra, Kayla, Ashley and Kaitlyn.”
Sewell was a First Team All-MW selection for the first time in her career and named to the All-Defensive Team for the second year in a row. It’s the third honor for Sewell, as she was named Second Team All-MW last year and Honorable Mention All-Conference during her sophomore campaign. Sewell averaged 15.3 points and 9.3 rebounds per contest in Mountain West play, which led the Cowgirls. She ranked first in rebounding, third in field goal percentage, fourth in free throw percentage, sixth in blocked shots and scoring. She also recorded double-figures in 22 of 29 games along with 11 double-doubles, which ranks ninth all-time in school history.
In addition to Sewell, sophomore Kayla Woodward was selected Second Team All-Conference, while senior Ashley Sickles and sophomore Kaitlyn Mileto who were named Third Team All-Mountain West. It’s the second honors for Woodward and Sickles during their career. Woodward was a Third Team pick last season while Sickles was named Honorable Mention a year ago. Mileto is a first time selection.
On the men's side, UW senior forward Leonard Washington was named to the All-Mountain West Third Team and All-Defensive Team. He is the ninth Cowboy to earn multiple All-MW honors during his career, which are voted on by the league’s head coaches and media.
A Second Team honoree last season, Washington paced the Cowboys in 2012-13. He averaged team highs of 13.0 points, 8.7 rebounds, 1.9 blocks and 1.3 steals. He ranked second in the MW with 12 double-doubles on the season, which included six during conference play and four straight at one point. Washington ranked in the top 10 of four MW statistical categories this season during league action, including leading the MW in steals at 1.6 per game and second in defensive rebounds at 7.1.
