It's here once again!!  The dreaded shifting of time on our clocks so that we can enjoy one more hour of daylight at the end of our afternoon, and lose one hour of light in the morning.

Daylight Saving Time begins this Sunday morning, March 11th, 2018 at 2 AM.  That's when our clocks will SKIP AHEAD one hour to 3 AM.

This not only means a bunch of groggy and cranky coworkers on Monday morning, but it also means that our bodies have to deal with a shift in our internal clocks. According to, this is the time of year when our bodies take a beating as we lose an hour of sleep.

For the first three days following the time change our heart health is affected by the deprivation of sleep.  It's the time of year when we see a significant increase in the number of heart attacks - especially for women.

Lack of sleep will also affect several other areas of our lives including:

  • Risk of an increase in depression and suicides, especially for men.
  • A risk of being in an auto accident as the number of traffic accidents will increase over the next three days.
  • An increased risk of suffering a stoke with the shift in our body's routine.
  • We lose focus and find our selves wasting more time than usual as we find it hard to concentrate.
  • Experience more concentrated headaches.  This again is due to the shift in our body's circadian rhythms and a possible shift in eating habits.
  • Feelings of extreme tiredness or fatigue.

Planning ahead, waking up an hour earlier than normal on Friday and Saturday can help prepare your body for the permanent time change which begins on Sunday.  As well as getting to bed earlier than normal on Sunday night, to ensure a good nights rest can help ward off some of the effects of Daylight Saving Time.
